What the Heck is Tuna Tartare?

One of the things that I have been using my iPhone for lately is some extreme cooking. This is not something that I am normally accustomed to, but I have to admit that I am tempted by all of the recipe apps on my iPhone! I have always watched Top Chef, and I have wondered what some of the fancier items are, and also how difficult they may be to create. The first item on my list was tuna tartare, but I didn't know exactly what it was...

I started researching it on my iPhone, and I found out that tartare is chopped raw fish that is specially seasoned. It is something used as a spread for toast or bread, or it can even be served by itself in a special dish. One of the recipes that I began with was fairly simple, but it had a little bit of Asian flair to the tuna tartare. It contained lime juice, wasabi powder, soy sauce, red pepper, avocados, and jalapeno peppers. This ended up making a fun little dish that a few of my friends enjoyed, and I promise you that they were highly impressed that I was able to pull off this culinary skill with only the help of my iPhone!

Travel To Portland!

One of the latest fun things that I have been doing with my iPhone is looking up various travel guides to see what cities I would like to add to my list of places to visit. I looked at an intricate travel guide on my iPhone for Portland, and it seems to have a number of different features, including Japanese Gardens, International Rose Test Gardens, and even a museum of Contemporary Craft.

If you are the outdoorsy type, you can take a bicycle ride around the Colombia River, and there are even weeklong bicycle tours available beginning in Portland. For beautiful dining, it's also a great idea to try the Stone Cliff Inn, which is up on a cliff overlooking the river and forests. Portland also has the fun cultural phenomenon of food carts, meaning that you can check out public areas of the city and purchase a number of different items, ranging from pizza to pitas, from a food cart on the street. The bottom line is that this is a city full of interesting travel ideas, and you can access all of these suggestions directly from your iPhone during your stay. It is definitely at the top of my list of places to go!

A Lamb Born With a Human Face?

I'm not one for far-fetched tales, but this is one of the craziest headlines that I have seen lately! Normally, I make it a priority to check out the day's headlines from my trusty iPhone because that is one of my favorite uses for it. I have a number of different websites saved that I can look at, and I'm especially addicted to checking out social bookmarking sites on my iPhone.

That being said, I am completely freaked out by this sheep that gave birth to a dead lamb that had a human face. Totally shocking! Apparently, a vet removed the dead lamb from the sheep with a cesarean section, and it seemed to have human features. This is a very rare instance, and it seems to be a deformity because the lamb's mother had an excessive intake of vitamin A. Last September, there was a goat in Zimbabwe that gave birth in similar circumstances. This goat baby had a head similar to a human, and it was alive until several villagers killed it because it was so disturbing.

I'm not sure to what to make of all of these circumstances except to be reminded of GoatBoy from SNL. Too soon?

Aww... BabyCam iPhone App

The BabyCam iPhone app is something that all new moms will definitely appreciate! When your child is growing, you definitely want to capture all of the candid moments available, and now you have that convenience with the quality of pictures taken by your iPhone. This app works in a special way because it has a sound button to play songs, drums, bells, and even doorbells to catch the attention of your child.

We all know how difficult it can be to get your baby to smile for the camera in a professional picture, but now you have the opportunity to interact with them to catch their attention for the simpler moments in life. You can also use the QuadCamera app to take up to eight continuous pictures of your child in motion, which is perfect when they are playing, running, or swinging on a swing. These are the moments that your child is going to remember, and you can easily upload them to your computer to e-mail to family members and friends! This is far more advanced than the days of an old photo album, and you can capture your child's earliest years easily and beautifully with this handy iPhone app.

Does Facebook Pose a Risk To You?

Unless you have been under a rock for the past several years, you probably have a profile on Facebook. You have also probably found that your aunt, grandmother, or third-grade teacher has a profile as well and wants to be your friend. Facebook is an incredibly convenient social media website, and you have even more opportunities to use it if you have one of the many Facebook iPhone applications available to you. This offers you the convenience of updating your profile on the go, where ever you are at.

Right now, there are 300 million users on Facebook, and that includes people from all walks of life. There are a few risks posed to you on Facebook, and one of them is who you accept as your friends. If you have accepted friends from work or even your boss, then you may slip up and write an update about how you hate your job and your boss, only to find out that you are in trouble at work the next day. Oops! On that note, it's also important to protect your privacy, with no-brainer information like your address or credit card number, to keep yourself safe on your profile.

Christmas Party Planning Tips

Christmas is upon us, and if you have family or friends coming over for the holidays, then you may either be excited or pulling your hair out due to the stress. I decided to look up a bunch of different Christmas party planning tips on my iPhone so that it can make your gathering that much less stressful. One of the biggest suggestions is to prepare simpler dishes so that cooking does not overtake your entire day.

Consider making a variety of different snacks for your family on Christmas Eve, or ask everyone to bring a different dish. One very popular and easy dish to make for Christmas that will make you look like a cooking pro is mussels with white wine sauce. You can easily pick up mussels already prepared from the grocery store, and you can cook them over pasta with a white wine and lemon butter sauce. There are many different easy appetizer ideas available for Christmas, but make sure that you feel confident in the dish that you are preparing so that it doesn’t go wrong and ruin your holiday party. Christmas is a wonderful time to spend with your family and friends, and there is no reason to stress out about planning your party or holiday gathering!

Budget Better With Your iPhone

Life can get pretty hectic if you are trying to budget for yourself, let alone your entire family! It's time that you get smart and start budgeting with the Spend app from your iPhone. Obviously, the iPhone is a convenient handheld device that you can take with you anywhere on the go. The point of the matter is to start using it when you are spending money on entertainment, grocery shopping, or even going out to dinner.

This is absolutely the best way to keep yourself from getting behind on your monthly bills. This application will allow you to keep track of your daily or weekly budget so that you do not go over. The great part of this is that you don't have to look like an embarrassing penny pincher because you can simply enter all of your monetary information directly into your iPhone. People may even think that you are texting, when really you are recording your expenses to stay on track with your budget. Budgeting is no longer nerdy when you can easily do it on the go with your iPhone to stay on top of your finances. This is perfect for individuals or families saving money!

Relaxing With PDFs For The iPhone

I have just recently gotten more into reading as an adult, and I have Harry Potter to thank for it. Don't judge me! I always read in middle school and high school, but as an adult I was more into TV and video games. However, I recently went on vacation, and pretty much all I did was relax by the pool in the sun. What a tough life!

I decided that my best bet was to download a bunch of different PDFs of books that I would like to read. I actually had the opportunity to finish the last Harry Potter book in the series, which was really exciting for me. I also downloaded a few other books that I was interested in, and it really is the best way to spend your time, especially since you can even read your iPhone when it is getting dark outside. The only thing that you have to watch out for is water splashing on it, or even a light rain or drizzle. As long as you keep your iPhone protected, then you are completely good to go. This is the best vacation tool for relaxing and recharging your battery! I highly recommend it.

Stay at a Healthy Weight

I was looking up some health information on my iPhone, and I found out that you really do have to eat breakfast to lose weight. That is something that many people may already know, but I never was into eating breakfast. I normally will roll out of bed and try to make it to work on time. I will have a cup of coffee to get me going, but by the time I realize that I am hungry, it's already about 10:30 in the morning.

I was looking at this blog on my iPhone that said that you do need to eat breakfast on a regular basis to stay at a normal weight. I do try to stay in shape, but it turns out that eating a normal breakfast daily is a huge part of that. If you do sleep for eight hours at a time, your body needs to be fueled by the time that you wake-up. If you skip breakfast, then your body has no energy to go through the day, and it will send it into starvation mode. It's also important to eat something that is healthy, like a whole-grain cereal, instead of just a sugary doughnut.

Heroes Star Has a Dramatic Change!

I feel a little bit behind on the times because I have just recently gotten into the show Heroes. This is a fantastic show that I am completely addicted to and have been downloading to watch on my iPod video. It is something that keeps me hooked, and I always watch it whenever I have any downtime, which is usually in class if I finish my assignment early. I am still working on finishing season one so that I can catch up, but I am nowhere near up to speed.

I love the character that Ali Larter plays in Heroes because she has such complexity and depth in her role. It's always fun to watch girls kick butt, so whenever I am watching Heroes on my iPhone, I absolutely love watching her. She was recently spotted out and about with a dramatically different hair color - fire engine red! I'm wondering how this is going to fare in her starring role on Heroes, especially since she was a sassy blonde for so long. However, the producers probably know all about this, and for all I know, it has something to do with the plot. Don't tell me anything because I am still on season one!

Going On a Cruise!

One of the best moves that I have made this year is planning my vacation for the fall. Of course, this means that I sadly did not have much time off this summer, but when the rest of my friends are putting their nose to the grindstone this fall, my boyfriend and I will be going on a cruise! I feel absolutely overworked and ready for a vacation, which is why I keep obsessively looking up the Carnival Cruise website on my iPhone. The iPhone is a truly amazing device because it allows me to be able to check out websites whenever I want, especially if I have some downtime at work.

Anyhow, I am finding out all that I need to know about our cruise ship, including the fact that they have unlimited sushi in a customized sushi bar! I also have taken the time to book some extra activities for when we dock in Mexico, meaning that we will be able to swim in a beautiful pool by the ocean and go snorkeling. I am just looking forward to some amazing fun in the sun and doing absolutely nothing at all for five whole days in Mexico!

How Do I Train My Puppy?

I am so happy to say that I just got a new dog, but that leaves me with figuring out how to train her. Puppies are difficult to deal with, especially if you don't know what you're doing. Still, they are so worthwhile because they are so adorable! I'm no Caesar Milan, but I definitely try to watch the Dog Whisperer show to get some insight on training a dog properly. I have a really bad track record with dog training because I have had several badly behaved dogs in my lifetime.

I decided that the best thing for me to do was to look up some dog training tips directly on my iPhone so that I could practice them whenever my puppy steps out of line. The main thing that I was concerned about was keeping her from going to the bathroom in the house, so the website that I looked up on my iPhone told me that I need to take her out as often as possible so that she starts to understand that is where she uses the bathroom. So far it is working pretty well, and I'm just hoping that I will get her trained properly to keep my house clean!

Protect Your Device With an iPod Case

For any iPod lover, it is so obvious that iPod cases are a necessity, especially since your beautiful iPod device can scratch so easily. I'm sure that you have noticed by now that your screen, click wheel, backplate, or even faceplate can get easily scratched, which is why it is important to invest in a case. There are so many iPod accessories available, but I am a big fan of getting an iPod case so that you can protect your device from any outside damage.

Most people do carry their iPod or iPhone in their purse or pocket, where it has the opportunity to jingle around and get scratched against many other items, causing physical damage. Especially for people who have iPhones and iPod touches, it is necessary to get some kind of case to protect the outer screen so that you don't break it. Seriously, a little bit of effort will go a long way, especially if you want to extend the life of your device. Many people make the mistake of not putting an investment into their devices, and then they will only have to end up buying a new one or getting the faceplate or backplate replaced from serious damage. Make life easier on yourself and get a case for your iPod!

Phone Calls From The iPod Touch

I am all about the use of my iPod touch, and I recently read this pretty interesting blog discussing how to make phone calls from an iPod touch. I had no idea that was something that you could actually do, especially since it wasn't technically an iPhone. The main reason that I didn't get an iPhone was because I do not have AT&T, and I feel like I have signed my soul away to Verizon. I would like to make a tangent and say how I absolutely hate how cell phone companies have you locked into a contract for two years at a time. It's truly not fair, especially if new technology like the iPhone comes out, and I can even use it.

Anyway, I did read this blog about how you can jailbreak your iPod touch so that you can make phone calls from it directly. This was an option that I considered, but I was really worried about damaging my device. You also do have to get head phones that are compatible to the iPod touch to make this phone call. It seems like a pretty simple process, but I guess I am just nervous about breaking my device. I think that I will do a little research to find out how safe this actually is...

iPhone Blog Time

I have always been an avid reader, and now I am addicted to reading blogs on the Internet. All of my friends call me a bookworm because I always have my nose in some kind of book, but since I have gotten my iPhone, the whole story has changed. I have a bunch of different blogs that I subscribe to on an RSS feed, and I'll usually spend several hours at night reading and catching up on them all.

All of the blogs range on a variety of topics, including environmental issues, fashion, and even family oriented. I don't necessarily have a family yet, but I do like to read about parenting issues in case I ever want a family of my own. Anyway, it's pretty obvious that I just like to read on a variety of topics to make sure that I am well-informed, which is something that I love about the Internet. One of the greatest things about my iPhone is the fact that I can catch up on these blogs anytime of the day whenever I want. Most often, I will read blogs from my RSS feed on my iPhone when I'm waiting for class to start because I do spend a lot of time on campus. So convenient!

Drink Milk For Healthy Teeth

Does that sound too good to be true? I was looking up some information on my iPhone about teeth whiteners because I want my smile to be pearly white, when I came upon this interesting research. Apparently, if you drink milk on a regular basis, that can help to prevent tooth decay, which keeps your teeth healthier and whiter as a result.

Some teeth whiteners are controversial because people claim that they do strip away the enamel on the outside of the teeth, which can weaken the teeth as a whole. However, they do work to whiten your teeth for a while, but relying on dairy regularly within your diet will help to keep your teeth looking better overall. Teeth that had been exposed to milk within this study had less of their enamel eroded than the teeth that had been exposed to other liquids, like diet soda and orange juice. Obviously, many of these drinks are acidic and can compromise the enamel on the teeth, which is why it is great to rely on milk to make sure that your teeth healthy and beautiful. That's definitely something to smile about, and I'm grateful that I found this helpful information for the health of my teeth on my iPhone!

iPhone Shopping On The Go!

I am definitely someone who is into clothes and fashion, and I have to tell you that my iPhone is always my go to device when I am out shopping. Now, I know that most girls like to go out in a group of friends and shop all day long, but that is not me at all. I am the type of person that takes shopping and fashion very seriously, so I often like to go by myself. The reason for this is that I want to try on the clothes that I like and not have anyone hold me back because they do not want to go to the stores that I want to go to. It sounds petty, I know, but it is much better for me in the long run.

I always use my iPhone when I go out shopping because I can have the salesperson take a picture of me in whatever I want to buy, and then I can look at it on myself to decide whether or not I like it. The iPhone does take clear quality pictures, so it is perfect to be my own personal fashion consultant. A wonderful portable shopping tool!

What's Up With The Next Gen iPod Touch?

It's always fun to speculate, and there are rumors swirling around about the next generation of iPod touch. It is said that it will contain a built-in microphone and also a video camera. These seem like wonderful new innovations, and people are speculating that these rumors could potentially be true. Apple did not comment on the rumors, but we, as iPod touch fans, are hoping that they are correct.

The iPod touch will be updated later in the year, and if it does have a built-in microphone, then it will be so much easier to use any voice applications for the iPod touch. This would enable the device to be used as a WiFi mobile phone so that you could make any type of voice call directly over the Internet, giving similar communication capabilities as to what you would find with the iPhone. Right now, the iPod touch does enable the use of a microphone, but you do need to buy an extra accessory to get that set up. iPod touch users can keep their ears open in September because that is normally when Apple releases their updates. Regardless, it's always exciting to see what type of new technology surrounds both the iPod touch and the iPhone - we are fans!

Celebrity Twitter On The iPhone

I love celebrities just as much as the next person, so when I joined Twitter, I decided it would be a great idea to follow a bunch of them. Twitter is really convenient, and I can always check on it via my iPhone, making it a fun little activity to keep tabs on people all over the world and what they are doing. Obviously, Twitter is popular for a reason, and so many celebrities have jumped on board because I always hear them promoting themselves to be followed on Twitter every time that they are interviewed.

One specific celebrity that I followed right off the bat was John Mayer, but I have to tell you that I was totally disappointed. Not only are most celebrity tweets very boring, but absolutely no celebrity will ever follow you back. I guess there is no way you should expect that from a celebrity because it is kind of like joining their fan club, and they really don't have the means to follow back all of their fans. Still, this lack of reciprocity got me pretty bored after a while. Maybe if specific celebrities like John Mayer had some amazing things to say other than what awards party they went to, then I would be more interested.

Is Facebook an Addiction?

Do I have a serious problem if I am constantly checking Facebook on my iPhone throughout the day at work? Meaning, that I go into the bathroom and take little breaks to say what's up to all of my friends and see what they are up to for the day? Facebook is both a blessing and a curse because at first, I was thinking how silly it is to always update your friends that you are going to the grocery store or watching a movie, etc. Really, do people care? The answer, of course, is yes, because now I am obsessively checking Facebook to see exactly what people are doing at different times throughout the day.

The other issue is the convenience of the iPhone, which makes me able to cyber stalk people, in all technicality. No, this does not mean that I want to kill my friends or steal their identities, but I do constantly check what they are doing to see why they haven't responded to me in a timely fashion. This is definitely far from the olden days when you had one phone in your home, with or without an answering machine, but now there is no excuse because we have Facebook!

Yellow Watermelon?

I am a true watermelon lover, and the story goes like this. I had bought myself a large and beautiful seedless watermelon because I truly am getting tired of accidentally eating seeds when I'm chowing down on a watermelon. I cut it open, only to find that it was... yellow. The funny part was that the sticker on the watermelon itself said "Yellow Seedless Watermelon", so I was warned. I had totally disregarded this label because I had no idea that a watermelon could actually be yellow, so I thought maybe it was just a brand name, or something? I freaked out when I saw that the inside was yellow because I thought I had chosen a rotten watermelon!

I looked up yellow watermelons on my iPhone right then and there, and I found out that a yellow watermelon was a totally viable option from Mexico that is pretty popular. Not with me! I had a really hard time eating a yellow watermelon because of the color itself. To me, it tasted different, even though when I ate it with my eyes closed, it tasted the same. I guess yellow watermelons are supposed to be more popular because of their deeper honey flavors, but I don't know if I have been converted yet.

Michael Jackson's Death Affects Twitter

You know that if you are looking for info on anything, then the place to go is Twitter. When the news of the death of Michael Jackson broke out, there were tweets like crazy all about him. So many of the celebrities using Twitter got on board to support his family and tweet that they loved and missed him. Of course, then every other non-celebrity Twitter user in America wanted to add their own two cents and also see what their favorite celebrities that they were following had to say about the tragic news. All of this Michael Jackson related Twitter action actually caused the site to temporarily shut down because of total overload!

There were even so many people searching for Michael Jackson on the Internet to find out about his death that Google temporarily read an error message. Crazy! Obviously, there were even popular Internet blogs that took it too far, like Perez Hilton, who had nasty things to say about Michael Jackson, referring to the fact that he be maybe faking it or making himself sick for attention. Check it out for yourself from Twitter on your iPhone so you can see how many supporters MJ has with the past evidence of the massive Twitter crash in his honor.

iTunes Can Thank American Idol

I have to admit that I have definitely become a sad, sad American Idol fan. I never thought that I would see the day, but it is the highlight of my week to see those talented kids attempt to do their best and then get criticized for it every Tuesday and Wednesday night. Sometimes it is like watching a train wreck, and sometimes I feel super jealous. And then there is the intrigue of always seeing how Adam will do his hair! The funny thing that I have noticed lately is how often they manage to plug iTunes by mentioning that you can download any American Idol song easily from iTunes. This must be really good for Apple because you know that there are millions of teens and tweens watching who are just eating this up. I even loved the staged plug for iTunes and iPhones from Matt G. this season who claim to be "just listening to his own song on he downloaded to his iPhone". Clever. As if that wasn't enough to look forward to the snarky criticisms from Simon, I can now download any of these delightful songs from iTunes?? Say it ain't so! But the sad part is that I probably will...

Treo or iPhone - My Dilemma

Having migrated from the Palm Pilot (circa 1998) to the Handspring (that was a cool logo) to the Palm V (that was a shocking ad to this day) to the Palm Treo 600, 650, and now my 755P, I can't seem to cut the cord on the Palm OS and completely switch over to the iPhone.

I have had the good fortune to own the iPhone and now the iPhone 3G. But try as I might, the Treo 755P is my choice for texting, calendar, contact list, and memos. I just love the keyboard on my Treo, and my fingers just fly over the keys.

On the iPhone, I still haven't mastered the keyboard, and ABSOLUTELY DESPISE the auto-"correct" on the iPhone (is there any way to disable that feature?).

I now use the iPhone primarily for internet searching and a few choice apps (Scramble addict, here), and really don't feel the need to ditch one or the other.

So I carry both devices - one in each pocket - every day. Eventually, however, the dual cell phone bills are going to get to be too much, and I will most likely cut over to the iPhone and stick with it.

How about you - do you know any dual-cell-phone-toting friends?
