Ah, the iPod. A modern marvel of technology that allows you to carry around your music on a device that can be smaller in size than your MasterCard. With smaller and smaller memory chips being introduced to the world, more and more people are switching to the convenient iPod to carry around their music. However, an iPod doesn’t do you any good if you do not have songs, videos, or any other media you want on it. Here is a guide to downloading your songs onto your iPod. We are going to assume you have never plugged your iPod into your computer before.
Items Needed:
- Your iPod
- USB cord from your iPod to the computer
- iTunes program downloaded onto your computer
- Disks containing drivers for your iPod if needed
Plug your iPod into your computer via the USB cord that came with your iPod. It is advisable to plug the cord into the computer first and then plug the iPod into the USB cord. When the iPod is plugged in, the computer will recognize that a new device has been attached and will go look for the drivers – computer programs that will allow the computer and iPod to communicate – and load them onto you system. Restart your system if it asks you to and when it restarts it will recognize your iPod as a valid device.
Open up your Internet Explorer to download iTunes. You can find it at http://www.apple.com/itunes. Once it is downloaded onto your computer, go ahead and launch the program. If you have downloaded the most current version of iTunes, it will open up to the iTunes store or your blank music library page. If there is a newer version of iTunes, you will get a dialog window asking you if you want to download the update. Click yes if that happens to get the most recent version of the program.
- Re-launch the software. The software is going to recognize that you have an iPod connected to your computer. It will then walk you through the registration process, asking you to name your iPod and then choose one of two options telling iTunes the priority in which to download music and media to your device. Some people prefer to manually control how music and media is downloaded to their device; some people prefer to allow iTunes and their iPod ‘sync’ to each other and download items automatically.
- Once you have set up your iPod and registered it, you are ready to add music to your iTunes library. Place the compact disk you want to copy into your computer’s CD-Rom. Your computer will ask you if you want to import the music into iTunes. Click yes, and you can watch as iTunes adds the compact disk’s tracks to your music library. Repeat this step for every CD you wish to add.
- When you have added all of the music you want, click the button in the lower right hand corner that says ‘Sync’. This will bring up a screen asking you if you want to sync your iPod. Click yes and wait until the computer tells you it is done. By syncing your iPod you are adding your music to it from the computer.
- When the computer is finished syncing your iPod, you can eject the device from your system, close down iTunes, and then enjoy all the music you have just added to your device.
